There hasn’t been an awful lot of Internet around for the last couple of weeks. There has been a lot of work though. Now it’s time for rest (sort of) I’m lying in a woven grass hut with a sort of thatched roof made from leaves about 30 seconds from a beautiful beach. I got woken up by the rain on the roof. I’m on isle saint marie, just off the coast of Madagascar. Even in winter the rain is warm enough to stand out in, during the day it’s just warm and sunny enough to be comfortable. I get to lie in a four poster waiting for it to be time to get up, wrap myself in a lamba and then walk along the beach to breakfast. Nice! A bit more comfortable (although equally beautiful) than the give nights I just spent camping in the rain forest.
There we pitched our tents under roofs of leaves in small pitches in the rain forest and listened to indri indri call, look it up on you tube, they’re lemurs with quite a distinctive call. It was (apart from the indri indri) really peaceful and we got to spend two days trekking in the rain forest.
The previous two weeks were all spent sleeping on the floor of a classroom of a school in Ambohidratrimo washing in a bucket of cold water and working every day. The participants did an amazing job. They worked with the kids at Akany Avoko and helped to build a set of stairs on what had been a dangerous steep hill between two sections of the children’s home. They completed a toilet block and refurbished the showers of a local poor community, worked in a very poor rural school and went out to local villages to help Malagasy scouts educate people on hand hygiene and water safety. More photos to follow when I get somewhere with a bit more bandwidth! (Possibly when I get home next week)
